![]() With many questions left unanswered, county officials say they plan on taking their time creating a plan to protect and repair two major pieces of local history. "We have some major structural damage, you have clean up, you have removal, you have the damage to this locomotive that the Historic Railway group oversees and owns. Engineers are still assessing what need to happen to make the structure safe, and what repairs need to be done. The building, however, received significant damage. ![]() ![]() "Really the miracle that the route this car traveled without hurting anyone is really a blessing," said Picente. The runaway car caused an accident at Schuyler and Oriskany streets, only resulting in minor injuries. " to really have a sit down with the rail companies to determine first and foremost why this happened and how and that it never happens again," Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said. Officials say the cargo train car was parked near the Susquehanna Railroad station along Route 12 in Utica, and somehow came free of its brakes. "Once the contractors remove our locomotive and the tender out of the structure, we'll have a better idea of the damage, but it is significantly damaged," said Lenz. Tuesday, a runaway train car sped through the city of Utica, slammed into the locomotive, shoving it into part of Union Station. "I was stunned and dumbfounded because this has been a labor of love for a lot of the rail historians here in Utica," said Harry Lenz, president of the organization. But on Tuesday, members of the Railway Historic Society received some bad news. The 100-year-old locomotive, which sits outside Union Station, has been a beloved icon to railway history for more than a decade. County officials were on the scene Wednesday morning assessing the damage, while local law enforcement is trying to figure out how this accident happened. Part of Union Station in Utica has been cordoned off, after a runaway train car caused significant damage to the building, as well as a 100-year-old antique locomotive. ![]()
